Physical Education (PE)
At Bridgeway Federation, our Physical Education curriculum inspires pupils to enjoy being active, develop their skills, and achieve their personal best. Pupils are supported to become confident and competent in a wide range of physical activities, building strength, stamina and coordination in ways that promote lifelong health and fitness. Opportunities to take part in competitive sports and collaborative activities help pupils develop character and values such as fairness, respect and resilience. Through PE, pupils are encouraged to stay active, embrace challenges, and develop the confidence and habits needed to lead healthy, active lives.
Our Key Stage 1 PE curriculum inspires pupils to discover the joy of movement and develop confidence in their physical abilities. Through a wide range of activities, pupils strengthen their agility, balance and coordination, learning to work both independently and alongside others. They are encouraged to embrace challenges, whether competing against themselves or collaborating in team activities, building resilience and a love of being active.
Pupils master fundamental movements such as running, jumping, throwing and catching, and begin to apply these skills creatively across different games and activities. They explore team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending, and enjoy expressing themselves through dance using imaginative movement patterns, fostering both physical and creative growth.
In Key Stage 2, pupils continue to broaden and refine their skills, learning to link movements into sequences and apply them across a variety of sports and physical challenges. PE encourages pupils to communicate, collaborate and compete with confidence, while developing the self-awareness to evaluate their own performance and celebrate progress.
Pupils apply running, jumping, throwing and catching in combination, and take part in a wide range of competitive games, including badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis, learning principles of attacking and defending. They develop strength, flexibility, technique, control and balance through athletics, gymnastics and dance, and take on outdoor and adventurous challenges, both individually and as part of a team. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their achievements, set personal goals and strive to reach their personal best, instilling confidence, determination and a lifelong love of physical activity.
Swimming is a key part of our curriculum, helping pupils to develop confidence, competence and independence in the water. In Year 5 and 6, pupils learn to swim over at least 25 metres using a range of strokes such as front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke, and are taught essential water safety skills, including self-rescue. These experiences give pupils the confidence to enjoy water-based activities safely and instil the skills and resilience to continue swimming throughout their lives.
