Art
Art, craft and design play an important role in developing creativity and self-expression. Through a high-quality art curriculum, pupils are inspired and challenged to explore a range of skills, techniques and ideas, enabling them to experiment, invent and create their own unique work. As children progress, they develop the ability to think critically and gain a deeper understanding of artistic processes and styles. Pupils also learn how art reflects and influences history and culture, helping them to appreciate the contribution creativity makes to society today.
At Key Stage 1, pupils are encouraged to explore their creativity and express their ideas through a wide range of art activities. Children use different materials and techniques to draw, paint and create sculptures, helping them to develop their imagination and share their experiences. They learn to experiment with colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space, building confidence in a variety of art and design skills. Pupils are also introduced to the work of artists, craft makers and designers, exploring similarities and differences in their work and making links to their own creative projects.
At Key Stage 2, pupils build on their creativity and skills through a wide range of art, craft and design experiences. Children are encouraged to experiment confidently with different materials and techniques, developing greater control and an increasing awareness of artistic styles and processes. Pupils use sketchbooks to record observations, develop ideas and reflect on their work over time. They improve their mastery of key techniques such as drawing, painting and sculpture, using a variety of materials including pencil, charcoal, paint and clay. Alongside practical skills, children learn about significant artists, architects and designers from history, helping them to understand the impact of art and design across different cultures and time periods.
Access Art
At Bridgeway Federation, we use Access Art as our platform from which we gain most of our CPD, sequence of learning in KS1 and KS2 (Pathways), Areas of Exploration (EYFS & SEND) and resources for the teaching and learning of Art. Teachers are free to choose the Pathways they feel would suit their pupil’s needs and/or enhance termly topics. “Talking Points” are pictorial and video resources that introduce teachers and pupils to a wide variety of artists, designers and craftspeople from across the world. Teachers are also free to think of their own lessons and use resources.
As an Arts Award School we give the opportunity for all Year 2 students to work towards their Discovery certificate, celebrating the Arts in our local area, the UK and around the world.
