Geography
At Bridgeway Federation, geography inspires pupils to develop a lasting curiosity and fascination about the world and the people who live in it. Through engaging and meaningful learning experiences, children build a strong knowledge of places, people, resources and both natural and human environments. As they progress, pupils deepen their understanding of key physical and human processes and explore how these interact to shape the landscapes and environments around them. Our geography curriculum equips children with the knowledge and skills they need to understand how the world is formed, how it is interconnected, and how it continues to change over time.
Our Key Stage 1 pupils begin to explore and understand the world around them. They learn about their local area, the United Kingdom and the wider world, developing an early sense of place. Children are introduced to simple geographical vocabulary linked to human and physical features and are encouraged to use practical skills such as observing their surroundings and exploring first-hand. Through these experiences, pupils build confidence and curiosity as they develop their locational awareness.
At Key Stage 2, pupils build on their understanding of the world by exploring places beyond their local area. They learn about the United Kingdom, Europe, and North and South America, developing a wider awareness of the world around them. Children study the location and key characteristics of important human and physical features, while strengthening their geographical skills. Through this, pupils deepen their locational and place knowledge and gain a better understanding of how different places are connected.
