Modern Foreign Language (MFL)

At Bridgeway Federation the Modern Foreign Language we teach is French. Children begin learning French in Year 3.

Learning a foreign language is celebrated as a gateway to the wider world, opening doors to new cultures and ways of thinking. A high-quality languages education inspires curiosity, broadens horizons and deepens pupils’ understanding of the world around them.

Through engaging and purposeful teaching, pupils are supported to express their ideas and thoughts in another language, and to listen, understand and respond confidently to its speakers in both speech and writing. They are encouraged to communicate for practical purposes, explore new perspectives, and engage with literature in its original form, enriching their learning and cultural awareness.

Languages learning also lays the foundation for studying additional languages in the future, equipping pupils with the skills and confidence to travel, study and work abroad. At Bridgeway Federation, pupils develop not only linguistic ability, but also a lifelong appreciation for global communication and cultural understanding.

Within the federation, our languages curriculum is designed to help pupils develop confidence and fluency in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Pupils learn to understand and respond to a variety of authentic sources, express their ideas clearly through discussion and questions, and write for different purposes and audiences using the grammatical structures they have learned. Alongside these skills, pupils are encouraged to explore and appreciate a wide range of literature in the language they are studying, fostering both communication skills and cultural understanding.
