Design and Technology

Design and Technology at Bridgeway Federation is a purposeful and engaging subject that nurtures creativity, curiosity and practical problem-solving. Through thoughtful design and hands-on making, pupils are encouraged to develop products that respond to real-life needs, taking into account their own ideas as well as the needs, values and experiences of others.

Learning in Design and Technology draws upon a wide range of disciplines, including mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections across the curriculum. Our children are supported to take risks in a safe and encouraging environment, helping them to become confident, resourceful and innovative learners.

By exploring design and technology from both the past and present, pupils develop a deeper understanding of how it shapes everyday life and influences the wider world. High-quality Design and Technology education plays an important role in preparing our pupils to become creative, capable and responsible citizens, contributing positively to their community and beyond.

Across both Key Stages, through a wide range of creative and practical activities, pupils are supported to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to engage confidently in the iterative process of designing and making. Learning opportunities are carefully structured to encourage pupils to explore ideas, test solutions and refine their work.

Pupils work within a variety of relevant and meaningful contexts, including the home and school, gardens and playgrounds, the local community, industry and the wider environment. These experiences help pupils to understand the real-world purpose of their learning and to apply their skills in thoughtful, purposeful and engaging ways.
